A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NEW TOWN HALL / RATSKELLER
The Ratskeller Leipzig is a traditional restaurant in the trade fair city of Leipzig . It was opened in 1904 in the New Town Hall , which was built on the foundations of the old Pleissenburg fortress. The former council wine cellar in the vaults of the town hall comprises seven meeting rooms with a total of 700 seats and since the late 1990s has been a restaurant serving home-style Saxon cuisine.

In 1895, the wealthy city of Leipzig bought the military meaningless Pleißenburg fortress from the Saxon King for over four million gold marks . With the exception of the tower, the fortress was demolished in 1897 to build a new town hall on the foundations. The master builder Hugo Licht was picked from an international architectural competition as the winner. According to his designs, an imposing architectural ensemble was built between 1899 and 1905 for a total of around nine million marks. On the floor plan of an irregular pentagon, a huge complex of buildings was erected around three courtyards, which literally underpinned the prosperity and distinct self-confidence of the trade fair city. The eclectic mixture of baroque and late renaissance is regarded as the crowning glory of the "Leipzig Art Nouveau" on the outside without a uniform, unified facade, but with many turrets, bay windows and gables .
